Interstitial
Cystitis
__________________________________________________________________
Interstitial cystitis
is a chronic condition, which presents with
pelvic pain,
dysuria,
frequency,
dyspareunia
and irritation symptoms similar to chronic
urinary tract infections.
Interstitial Cystitis or more commonly known among
us sufferers as (IC) is a chronic, debilitating
bladder disease, which is often overlooked by the
medical profession. Usually, during examination
there is no evidence of bacteria. Some people
believe the interstitial cystitis is an auto immune
reaction. This disease seems to affect women more
than men; although many men can be misdiagnosed with
prostate problems as the symptoms are very similar
to those of interstitial cystitis.
Some
people are more at risk from interstitial cystitis
than others and although there appears to be no
conclusive cause for interstitial cystitis several
theories abound. Some of the risk factors for
interstitial cystitis include:
·
Being
Female
– women suffer from interstitial cystitis on average
9 times more than men.
·
Chronic
Pelvic Pain
– Women who have this syndrome are likely to suffer
from interstitial cystitis also.
·
Menstruation
– interstitial cystitis seems to be worse during
monthly periods.
·
Suffering from
- Fibromyalgia, Urethral Syndrome, Vulvodynia, IBS,
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Allergies, and other
Auto-immune disorders such as Scleroderma.
·
Also
– being sexually active and perimenopausal.
The Symptoms of Interstitial Cystitis are:
·
Pain in
the pelvic area, abdominal or vaginal areas.
·
The
feeling or urgency to urinate and frequent urination
·
Antibiotics do not cure the condition
·
Longer
term scarring of the bladder
Treating
interstitial cystitis is difficult. Because the
cause is unknown, there is no one treatment which
appears to work for everyone and misdiagnoses is
quite common also. It is wise, however to take a
precautionary approach and try to manage your
condition if you are an interstitial cystitis
sufferer. Some tips are:
-
Try using natural uti home remedies plan. This
will help reduce development of recurrent urinary
tract infections may help to reduce some symptoms.
-
Education about bathroom hygiene, avoiding harsh
soaps and ‘feminine deodorants’ around the vaginal
area may help.
-
Douches should be avoided as they tend to upset
the protection offered by the normal vaginal
flora.
-
Lubrication during sex helps to reduce irritation
of the urethra and may reduce symptoms.
-
Changing sexual position may reduce the symptoms
of interstitial cystitis.
-
Follow practical steps to avoid contracting a
urinary tract infection as this will make things
worse.
